Part 1
The solution for enhanced patient safety started pouring in at 15:10 in the video with Bob Brigham (MBA), Chief administrative officer at Mayor Clinic Jacksonville, noting that the medical industry can learn from other related industry. Following the crash at the much beloved Brazilian Formula 1 that left 4 drivers dead within the space of one year, numerous changes where effected in order to ensure that safety standards is enhanced. The medical industry looked into these changes and applied them within their field for similar results.
Part 2
Issue of trust: 17:46
A number of highlights were made from the video. The first is that there is a high level of distrust between the industry and its patients. The patients find it very difficult to trust all information coming out the medical sectordue to numerous accounted cases of misrepresentation where people knew something and failed to address, leading to more complex issues for the patients in the process. This is understandable as medical practitioners are judged based on level of medical success created or number of errors that occur within their sphere. Thus, in order to void much needed criticism and potential drop of license, these medical practitioner seem to cover up errors, which normally end up into much higher level of fatalities for the patients. In reverse, patients have lost their trust for the medical field. Pete Conrad’s widow also confirmed this by stating that her husband had gone to space (something that required tremendous caution and involved high level of risks) without issues, but when he went to the hospital, he died as a result of neglect, which is big issues for concern. She also noted that the incident reduced her level of trust for the medical sector, which is basically what other patients are increasingly worried about.
Importance of communication 16:20
Secondly, it was noted thatcommunication is vital within the medical sphere as they reflect on issues from other industry. In the case of the challenger accident, someone knew something and didn’t communicate back because he viewed it to be minor, but this left all crew members dead in the process. The lack of communication is highlighted as the major issue with about 37% of errors left undocumented in the field, leaving numerous patients at high health risks. This is understandable as communicating these errors to the right specialists will help ensure that they are treated and the patient’s health protected in the process.
In line with the pilot that flew its plane into the water and saved the lives onboard, discipline is vitalin the success of his mission. In order to measure such level of success, he has to first calm the situation, put high priority first and discipline himself to the mission. This was also suggested as a solution to the issues being experienced in the medical field at the moment. The understanding presented here is that medical practitioners need to discipline themselves towards delivering the overall course of their profession – which is enhanced patients’ health. If they are disciplined, they will be able to take extra measures to ensure that patients are attended to as necessary, any resulting error is communicated and handled, and overall quality of their services improved in the process.
From the above discussions, it can be deduced that communication and discipline can be used to restore consumers’ trust. This is because communication will help highlight issues, address them as necessary; while discipline will ensure that the focus of practitioners are completely on consumers’ and not personal gains. Effectively, patients will be treated as necessary, increasing their overall trust in the process.
